Well today is done and over.
It went real quick. We were up
early once again to head to the center market of Kumasi to assist Aninwah with
their public clinic. We ended up at the
wrong market and resting for about an hour—Ghana time is sporadic but I was
grateful for the extra sleep.
We showed up at the market, which happened to be the same
place I visited last year. The clinic
wanted some of our students to perform breast exams while the rest taught,
performed assessments and assisted giving out the medications. I offered my services for the breast
palpations but was declined…darn!
The clinic went really well. There were some arguments
because of line cutting but it was good.
The students performing the breast exams were able to refer a good
amount of patients for further testing.
The teachings went good and we passed out a lot of condoms!! I was able to dance with some of the people
and that is always really fun.
We paused for lunch and headed up to Komfa Anokye trauma
center. It is the state of the art
trauma center in Ghana, and possibly Western Africa. They gave us a tour of the hospital and we
were able to finish up by stopping in the children’s wards and giving away toys
to the little kids! They were excited for us to go there and I am sure the
nurses were stoked that we gave them all little flutes!
I thought it was really cool that the doctors trusted our
group of students to perform breast exams on the people today. That is something that I don’t think is done
much here. I really like, again, that
those opportunities are given to us. If
you are an able body, go help. They don’t
care about your credentials, all they want is your assistance. I think that is really amazing.
